Lately, we’ve been getting questions about the potential for receiving tax credits back for buying “energy-efficient garage doors.” Homeowners are requesting, or being encouraged to request, something called a QMID – Qualified Manufacturer Identification Number. QMIDs are codes that are assigned to a qualified manufacturer for claiming energy efficient home improvement tax credits on IRS form 5695.
The Truth About Garage Door Tax Credits
Unfortunately, there are no ENERGY STAR garage doors and there is no tax credit available for garage doors of any insulation level. DASMA (Door & Access Systems Manufacturers Association International) released a special bulletin stating “DASMA worked with the EPA, which operates ENERGY STAR, to attempt to develop an ENERGY STAR program for garage doors.” Unfortunately, that effort was not successful. As of 2026, ENERGY STAR does not currently have specifications for garage doors.
The Benefits of an Insulated Garage Door
Just because a garage door may not qualify for tax credits, doesn’t mean it won’t have other benefits. An insulated garage door can still be energy efficient by helping to regulate the temperature in the garage and reducing the amount of heat or cold entering the garage. If you live in a boisterous neighborhood or by a busy street, your garage door could help deplete some of that excess noise. Insulated garage doors are also known for their enhanced durability. Depending on the insulation level, it can help contribute to the door’s strength and save you on frequent repairs or replacements in the future.
