Lately, we\u2019ve been getting questions about the potential for receiving tax credits back for buying \u201cenergy-efficient garage doors.\u201d Homeowners are requesting, or being encouraged to request, something called a QMID \u2013 Qualified Manufacturer Identification Number. QMIDs are codes that are assigned to a qualified manufacturer for claiming energy efficient home improvement tax credits on IRS form 5695.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Unfortunately, there are no ENERGY STAR garage doors and there is no tax credit available for garage doors of any insulation level.\u00a0 DASMA (Door & Access Systems Manufacturers Association International) released a special bulletin stating \u201cDASMA worked with the EPA, which operates ENERGY STAR, to attempt to develop an ENERGY STAR program for garage doors.\u201d Unfortunately, that effort was not successful. As of 2026, ENERGY STAR does not currently have specifications for garage doors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Just because a garage door may not qualify for tax credits, doesn\u2019t mean it won\u2019t have other benefits. An insulated garage door can still be energy efficient by helping to regulate the temperature in the garage and reducing the amount of heat or cold entering the garage.
